Mission Core Values History What We Believe

Who We Are

We are a multi-generational, multi-ethnic community church in the Dunbar-Southlands neighbourhood of Vancouver.

We are everyday people seeking to follow Jesus in our everyday lives. We are professionals, students, caregivers of parents or little ones, exploring new career paths, retired. Some of us have lived in Canada all of our lives, and some of us have come to call Canada home more recently.

We believe that God is active all the time, and that He's given each of us work to do, so whatever fills our days, we strive to live in a way that brings God's peace, justice, and wholeness to our neighbourhood and the world.

We work alongside our pastor and the Leadership Team in caring for the community - mentoring and discipling people in the way of Jesus. Although we are far from perfect, many who come to Marineview say it feels like home - that they find a sense of companionship, encouragement and acceptance here. Whether you are new to exploring life with God, or have been a believer for a long time, we welcome you to share the journey with us.

Mission

Welcoming and loving all people into the joy and freedom of Jesus.

Core Values

We believe that our ordinary lives make up part of God’s larger story, and so the ordinary things of our lives are the sacred means by which we receive and offer God’s grace. Our way of being is summed up in our core values:

History

Marineview Chapel began in 1961 with a small group of faithful believers who wanted to show God’s love in the place where they lived. Located on the west side of Vancouver, the church has served the neighbourhoods of Dunbar, Southlands, Kerrisdale, and UBC since that time.

Marineview Early Years (version 5).png

With roots in the Christian Brethren movement, a number of Marineview’s founding members were also involved in establishing Regent College, an innovative graduate school of theology with a focus on empowering the laity. This same emphasis on developing and enjoying the contributions of every member continues to be present in Marineview today.

In the early 1980s, Marineview planted two daughter churches: Emmanuel Christian Community (Richmond) and University Chapel (UBC-Point Grey). For over 40 years, Marineview also provided a vibrant and busy preschool for young families in the neighbourhood.

Marineview has a legacy as a sending church - we have actively supported missionaries all over the world, and have provided a training ground for those preparing for ministry. The church maintains strong ties to the youth ministry at Daybreak Point Bible Camp on Anvil Island (also known simply as “Anvil”).

Today, members of Marineview come from a variety of different backgrounds, but there continues to be a passion to show God’s love in our neighbourhood and to be a blessing to those around us. Our approach to ministry integrates the Brethren vision of lay preaching and leadership alongside pastoral staff who lead and encourage members as they contribute their unique gifts. In addition to opportunities to work and worship together, our community offers regular periods of rest and play - moments where we can be refreshed and nourished by God and each other.

We gratefully acknowledge that we live, work and worship on the unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl’ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Coast Salish peoples.

What We Believe

Marineview holds to the beliefs expressed in the Nicene Creed, an ancient profession of faith which unites Christians around the world.

We believe in one God,
      the Father almighty,
      maker of heaven and earth,
      of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
      the only Son of God,
      begotten from the Father before all ages,
           God from God,
           Light from Light,
           true God from true God,
      begotten, not made;
      of the same essence as the Father.
      Through him all things were made.
      For us and for our salvation
           he came down from heaven;
           he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit
and the virgin Mary,
           and was made human.
           He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;
           he suffered and was buried.
           The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.
           He ascended to heaven
           and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
           He will come again with glory
           to judge the living and the dead.
           His kingdom will never end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit,
      the Lord, the giver of life.
      He proceeds from the Father and the Son,
      and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.
      He spoke through the prophets.
      We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
      We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
      We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
      and to life in the world to come. Amen.
